The values of HPL

I was recently asked to write content for an educational blog about my values and how they are demonstrated in the classroom and it started me thinking about how HPL reflect a lot of those values; the most important one being independence. I believe that the greatest thing we can teach our pupils is how to be an independent learner and how to take control of their own progress. Do you all feel the same or is there another aspect that is particularly important to you?

Resilience and problem solving are the most important to me. If you can't take feedback constructively and act on it, and if your only problem solving strategy is to ask someone for help, you are unlikely to be a high performing learner.

Andrew, your post is spot on. We talk in schools all the time about trying to create resilient learners who can find answers when they hit problems but I often feel like we do the opposite.

Absolutely; to both of you. I do question that the more we do as teachers, the less that pupils learn how to tackle their own problems and, as you say, build resilience as a learner.
