Social and emotional learning (SEL) plays a critical role in high-performance learning. By developing students' social and emotional skills, such as self-awareness, self-management, and social awareness, teachers can help students build healthy relationships, manage stress and anxiety, and cope with challenges. These skills are essential components of high-performance learning because they enable students to develop the resilience and adaptability needed to excel academically and in their personal lives.

One excellent resource on high-performance learning that incorporates SEL is the book "The High-Performance Mindset: How to Become a Top Performer in Any Area of Your Life" by Dr. Craig Manning. This book provides practical guidance on how to develop the mindset and skills needed for high-performance learning, including strategies for managing stress and anxiety, building resilience, and fostering a growth mindset.

Moreover, research has shown that SEL can have a significant impact on students' overall wellbeing and academic success. When students develop social and emotional skills, they become better equipped to handle the challenges of school and life, leading to improved academic performance, behavior, and well-being.

To promote SEL in the classroom, educators can utilize various strategies such as cooperative learning, role-playing, and reflection exercises. Additionally, teachers can create a positive and supportive classroom environment that fosters empathy, respect, and understanding among students.

In conclusion, nurturing social and emotional learning is critical for high-performance learning and overall well-being. By developing students' social and emotional skills, educators can help them build the resilience and adaptability needed to excel academically and in their personal lives. What strategies have you found most effective in promoting social and emotional learning in your own life or with students?

  1. Wellbeing and Relationships
I think that this is an area that has little focus but that is highly impactful on pupils achievement and life skills.

I think that it all starts with building positive relationships within the classroom. Teachers need to build these relationships with their pupils. Taking notice of mood, asking about events that have happened outside of school or of your subject, building a supportive atmosphere within your classroom.

Everything we are looking to do or achieve in the classroom starts with these relationships. Build strong and positive relationships and all is possible: without them, everything is a struggle.

I will be looking up Dr. Craig Manning's book for more ideas.

  2. Wellbeing
At Day Waterman College we use the PERMA framework to assess student wellbeing. The acronym stands for positive engagement, positive emotions, positive relationships, positive meaningfulness and positive accomplishment. We also use the VIA character assessment. Both PERMA and VIA align well with the HPL framework. The key component in the system is the use of the data to enhance student engagement and wellbeing. There is always more work to be done in this area. Happy students are more likely to become high performance learning.

  4. Well-being leads to high performance
As an early year's educator, I believe that children perform well only if they are happy within the setting. Happy children engage and involve in activities that has an impact on their performance. They are able to self-regulate and are eager to learn thus become independent confident learners.
