This update's Big Question
It has been announced recently that One-word Ofsted grades will continue. In the UK there has been discussion and debate about the value of One-word grades and the impact this can have on teacher retention and staff wellbeing. With differing inspection frameworks and regulators for schools, internationally and in the UK (maintained and Independent Schools) is it time for a rethink on how we measure the quality of the education provided for children?

This new resource provides guidance to schools on how to systematise and optimise HPL within the school once it has been initially adopted. It pulls together in a single document the progression routes for students, for teachers and for the entire institution. It identifies ‘what good looks like’ and so enables you to build towards it and to monitor progress. It provides a one stop reference point for HPL Leads and the entire school community.

Using a blended distance pedagogy in teacher education to address challenges in teacher recruitment - Glover & Stewart (2024)
How do we address global teacher shortages? UNESCO recently published a Global Report on Teachers: Addressing Teacher Shortages and Transforming the Profession (2024) with the intention of mobilizing international and country efforts to empower, recruit, train and support teachers within resilient education systems of collaborative, innovative, and cohesive teaching profession. The report makes the following recommendations:
- Develop holistic teacher policies aligned to national priorities and the policy landscape that include all dimensions affecting teachers in an integrated manner, using a collaborative framework and social dialogue.
- Collect more and better data to systematically report on the indicators agreed in the Education 2030 Framework for Action.
- Transform teacher education and professional development from course-based, individual endeavours to lifelong, collaborative, and teacher-led processes.
- Improve the working conditions of teachers, beginning with salaries and incentives to ensure teachers receive competitive compensation and benefits and ensure gender equality in pay and treatment.
- Ensure adequate public, domestic funding that is consistent with the existing benchmarks of 6 per cent of GDP and 20 per cent of total government expenditure.
- Enhance international cooperation to engage different constituencies in collaborative efforts to address teacher shortages and amplify the outreach of teacher policies.
Taking recommendation 3 in to consideration, how do we Transform teacher education and professional development from course-based, individual endeavours to lifelong, collaborative, and teacher-led processes. Glover & Stewart (2024) state that recruiting high-quality teachers is critical in supporting the delivery of an effective education experience for learners in schools. Their paper examines how a flexible route in to teaching can contribute to addressing the challenges of teacher recruitment in Wales. To address the teacher recruitment crisis, do we need to be more flexible and creative in the way teachers are trained?
