Modern Foreign Languages Subject Community Lead - Deanne Wiseman, Calday Grange Grammar School

It was wonderful to see so many people at the

HPL Annual Conference. It really helped to focus my ideas on a few things and I thoroughly

enjoyed running my "planning for HPL" workshop.

We talked about how to tweak activities to ensure that all ACPs and VAAs are covered. One of these was an activity that I did recently to get pupils talking about a sentence builder by issuing the challenge that they needed to decide which sentence I would grade as the most difficult

one in the sentence builder.

I gave them 2-3 minutes to discuss this with their partner, explaining their ideas and justifying their decision. Then they wrote down their idea and I revealed the "level of difficulty" that I had

assigned each part of the sentence builder.

I really enjoyed this activity and it brought in an aspect of empathetic learning that would otherwise have been lacking from using the sentence builder.

Do you have any ideas for tweaks like this that you use - or does this make you think about things that you could do? Join in on my discussion below, by clicking the button.

This update's Big Question by Mark Tomlins, HPL Central

This week we are looking at Adaptive Teaching. This is a big topic within education and is seen as the successor to differentiation.

This week's Big Question:

  • How is your school embracing Adaptive Teaching and how does HPL support this?
Share examples of what your school is doing in our Subject Communities by clicking the button below.

Congratulations to the students from International School of Nice who participated in the Globeducate Model United Nations 2024 event, hosted by Agora Madrid International School. "Students cultivated their critical thinking and leadership skills while gaining a deeper understanding of international relations. From discussing international migration to the impact of artificial intelligence on governance, participants engaged in meaningful dialogue to find solutions for a better world.

Uliana, student of Japan in the Security Council from International School of Nice, was recognised with the Outstanding Delegate Award for her exceptional performance, diplomacy, and contribution to the debates." Well done to King Edward VI Handsworth Wood Girls' Academy for being recognised for their excellent outcomes at KS4 in 2023 by the Schools, Students and Teachers Network (SSAT's) Educational Outcomes Awards.

The award recognises that King Edward VI Handsworth Wood Girls’ Academy is among the highest performing secondary schools in the country, based on 2023 performance data and information from Ofsted. This is brilliant! We are celebrating with you! #EveryoneCan

Well done to GEMS Founders School, Dubai for achieving a "Very Good" overall outcome for their 2023-2024 Inspection. It is well deserved!

We at HPL Central are thrilled to know that you have been implementing the High Performance Learning philosophy and framework across your school since September 2019; reaching out beyond your classrooms into the wider learning community!

💡 Thinking Education

Differentiation is out, Adaptive Teaching is in!

Adaptive Teaching - Embracing the New Normal - Morgan Whitfield (2024)

What is the shift from differentiation to adaptive teaching? Alex Quigley made the argument that differentiation is dead, and that the nail in the coffin came from the 2019 Department of Education’s Early Career Framework. It was here that we finally see that differentiation has lost its usefulness as a concept, despite being so ingrained as a core component of teaching. Instead, there is now a movement towards adaptive teaching. Adaptive teaching does not insist that teachers artificially create distinct tasks for different groups of pupils or set lower expectations for particular pupils. The key to adaptive instruction is to respond to students’ individual needs with scaffolding, targeted questioning and prompts.

Let us know what you're up to!

We love to see what our HPL Family is up to! If you have any resources, successes, initiatives or anything else you would like to share with the Global HPL Community make sure to submit them on HPL Online.
