This update's Big Question by Mark Tomlins, HPL Central
The Big Question this week follows on from Dr Helen Street’s keynote at the 5th Annual HPL International Conference on Building Whole School Contextual Wellbeing. During the keynote, Dr Helen Street introduced contextual wellbeing and challenged delegates to reflect on their whole school approaches to building positive wellbeing. She challenged delegates to focus on Autonomy and Agency, on Social and not the individual, the process and not the outcomes.
According to NHS Mental Health of Children and Young People Survey (2023), 20.3% of 8 to 16-year-olds, 23.3% of 17 to 19 year olds, 21.7% of 20 to 25 year olds have a probable mental health disorder.
My question this week is how does your school and HPL support wellbeing? To gain a deeper understanding of Contextual Wellbeing, please read this week’s Think Piece below.

The Social Side of Wellbeing – an extract from Contextual Wellbeing
Dr Helen Street (founder of Positive Schools) covers the current climate of wellbeing at schools and where our efforts are mis-serving us. Her assessment of the landscape points to the core of the problem being our focus on the individual rather than a perspective that includes the broader context of the student’s environment. Read the extract below and have your say on the HPL Wellbeing Subject Community forum.
