This update's Big Question

Mark Tomlins, Assistant Director Teaching and Learning at HPL was favourably impressed this week to find on LinkedIn a short video from Dr Bruce Perry. In the video Dr Perry is talking about “Reframing Classroom Discipline”. In this video Dr Perry talks about existing behaviour systems based on punishments and suggests that they do not work and forwards the idea of supportive discipline. This reminded Mark of his first steps into HPL in his school. Mark mentioned that the school's behaviour policy was rewritten with the HPL VAAs at its heart.

This week’s questions are:

  • How do we think HPL supports our behaviour systems?”
  • Do we think HPL supports a Supportive Discipline system?
Have your say in our Subject Communities Forums.

🔎Subject Community Lead Spotlight

This week we are focusing on Kirsten Parker for our HPL Subject Community Lead. Kirsten leads the forum talking and discussing the theme of "Being an HPL Lead" in school. Kirsten has vast experience of leading her school through the HPL Pathway for the World Class School Award, and has led the school after Accreditation and then preparing and completing Re-Accreditation. Within her forum Kirsten poses questions for HPL Leads and others about how one can drive HPL within their school. If you are an HPL Lead or even a leader in your school then this is a great area to discuss leading HPL, sharing experiences and solutions. This is also the forum for asking questions and having feedback from the whole HPL community to those questions. Get involved today, ask your questions or have your say!

📚Resource Highlight

Reframing Classroom Discipline - Bruce D. Perry, MD, PhD - Principal of the Neurosequential Network

In this video, Bruce discusses why punitive, exclusionary, and contingency-based disciplinary models in schools may be having the exact opposite effect they are intended to on students. He reframes discipline in the context of the neurobiology of distress and reward, proposing alternative tactics for educators and administrators.

💡 Thinking Education

Inquiry-based learning: make your classroom more inclusive - Michelle Morgan, Cambridge University Press & Assessment (2023)

In this article, the author discusses the importance of inquiry-based learning (IBL) and the inclusivity of IBL. Michelle, concludes with the final thoughts that Inquiry-based learning is an active learning approach in which students have choice and voice. Students are motivated to learn because they are involved in the decision-making process and this encourages them to take responsibility for their learning. It’s collaborative and flexible, making the classroom a positive inclusive place where students really want to learn.
