High Performance Learning CPD Intelligent Student Grouping
31 January 2024 | 9:15 a.m. - 12:15 pm (UK Time) £119 + VAT per delegate
How do we group students for greatest impact on learning? Within this professional development session, we will explore the rationale for how we group our students and what considerations affect these decisions. We will reflect on the evidence about the impact of grouping arrangements on student learning and look at current thinking around expertise development and adaptive teaching.
In this 3-hour session we will:
- Establish an understanding of ability and mixed ability grouping and how these impact upon teaching and learning.
- Explore some teaching approaches for managing a range of performance in our classroom.
- Think about how teachers establish and raise expectations.
- Suggest further reading and small scale research activities.

This update's Big Question
For this week’s 'Big Question', we have taken inspiration from the Laidlaw Foundation’s Report - “Building Tomorrow’s Healthy, Confident and Productive Citizens – an education for our children” (December 2023). What emphasis, as educational establishments, should our schools place on wider or transferable skills? Should we merely focus on our subjects and the knowledge needed to achieve high assessment and qualification or should we be teaching those skills that our students will need for life? Or is the teaching of these transferable skills like the VAAs and ACPs in the HPL framework able to achieve both? Have your say in the Subject Communities Forum.

Building Tomorrow's Healthy, Confident and Productive Citizens (An Education for our Children) - Laidlaw Foundation (December 2023).
This week has seen the publication of the Laidlaw Foundation's Report – “Building Tomorrow’s Healthy, Confident and Productive Citizens – an education for our children” (December 2023). This report has already started a lively discussion on LinkedIn. “This report shows that there is a groundswell of support for a broader focus across our education system” is a quote from the forward, as well as, “This is an exciting vision for a future education system. If we get this right, we can further reinforce the role of schools and multi-academy trusts as civic anchors and build a new model of system-led autonomy." This report looks at parents desires for opportunities for their children to develop those skills that will fit them for life as well as focusing on their wellbeing. An interesting read that will undoubtedly spark greater discussion and writing to come.
