The Economist Topical Talk Magic Encounters Competition Winners!!
The Economist Educational Foundation is pleased to announce students from Day Waterman College, Nigeria as the winners of the Politics Prize 2023 Topical Talk Magic Encounters Competition.
HPL Students were given the platform to craft their Standpoints on Politicians: Standards of Behaviour. We are exceptionally proud of HPL students at Day Waterman College for achieving this phenomenal accolade! Your dedication to this competition and team collaboration made this possible. Thank you to all the teachers who persevered and supported learners in completing all the lessons for their final standpoint.
Additionally, we would like to congratulate all other HPL Students who entered this competition. Thank you for your commitment, hard work, and creativity.
The Economist Judges, Miranda Mitra (International editor of The Economist) and Robert Guest (Deputy editor of The Economist) selected the students' work unanimously from the other submissions. The students from Day Waterman College will receive a certificate and a goodie bag and will have their work published on the Economist website.
The names of learners in the winning team at Day Waterman College, Nigeria are as follows:
  • Aniela Eben Spiff
  • Michelle Ifegbuike
  • Abdulrahman Busari
  • Edidiong Usoro
  • Kayode Esuruoso
  • Emmanuel Agun
Below are the comments made by one of the Judges "Miranda Mitra (International Editor of the Economist):
"The video had an extremely clear opening and excellent narration so it was easy to grasp the video's structure. The other element I enjoyed was the use of humour as a means of engagement. Making someone laugh in journalism can also be a way of memorably illustrating an important point, or emphasising the ludicrous nature of a certain policy or action. I thought the scene demonstrating the dangers of populist giveaways was great in this regard. And the conclusion, with its comparison between good and bad politicians, also left the viewer with ideas to take away and consider. Bravo!"

High Performance Learning CPD

Intelligent Student Grouping

31 January 2024 | 9:15 a.m. - 12:15 pm (UK Time)

£119 + VAT per delegate

How do we group students for greatest impact on learning? Within this professional development session, we will explore the rationale for how we group our students and what considerations affect these decisions. We will reflect on the evidence about the impact of grouping arrangements on student learning and look at current thinking around expertise development and adaptive teaching.

In this 3-hour session we will:

  • Establish an understanding of ability and mixed ability grouping and how these impact upon teaching and learning.
  • Explore some teaching approaches for managing a range of performance in our classroom.
  • Think about how teachers establish and raise expectations.
  • Suggest further reading and small scale research activities.

This update's Big Question

As we look at adaptive teaching within an inclusive classroom, could we use the HPL competencies as varied focuses for differentiation? Not differentiation by activity but by the competencies / skills to be focused on.

How have you used HPL to support an adaptive, inclusive classroom? Visit the subject communities forums and have your say!

FGC Programme Round Up

Explore the Evidence: Student Grouping with Melanie Saunders

We were delighted to have welcomed colleagues to Explore the Evidence focused on Student Grouping, chaired by Melanie Saunders. Attendees critically reflected and discussed the paper by Wiliam & Bartolomew (2001). It’s not which school but which set you’re in that matters: the influence of ability-grouping practices on student progress in mathematics. During the session questions were raised around whether student grouping supports the students or whether they support the teacher.

HPL Case Study 1: Developing Risk-taking in Physical Education - Niall Statham, Lynn Horwell, Nadeen Whitehead (2023), Hartland International School

Academic risk-taking is a situation in which students make decisions about more difficult or easier assignments to do in academic settings. With this in mind, we sought to explore the subject area further, investigating whether the notion of risk-taking in learning could be expanded into a non-traditional academic setting – Physical Education (PE). While there are bodies of research surrounding risky play and academic risk-taking, the literature is less developed in this area.

The aim of this unit of work was to investigate whether dedicated activities designed to encourage calculated risk-taking would alter student perceptions and further develop their understanding of the concept within a non-academic setting.

Agile: Risk taking in PE - Niall Statham (2023), Hartland International School

This video will enable you to reflect and consider how you can encourage risk-taking in your lesson planning and curriculum planning for PE.
