The Big Question
For this update we are introducing "The Big Question" and welcome colleagues to attend their relevant subject community to debate and discuss their views on a current issue, topic or challenge in education. This update's Big Question: The UK government recently announced proposed changes to A-levels and T-levels which could be replaced by a new qualification for all school leavers in England. The proposal laid out plans for all 16 to 19-year-olds to study five subjects as part of the new Advanced British Standard. A key aspect of the proposed changes would enable students to combine both academic and vocational elements, with typically three major and two minor aspects. Do you think these proposed changes will benefit all students? In your view what should 16â19-year-old qualifications look like? |

Revealing fathersâ impact on their childrenâs learning and development: our new study - H. Norman and J. Davies. (2021). Centre for Employment Relations, Innovation and Change What do we know about fathersâ roles in supporting their childrenâs learning and development â and what else would we like to find out? Lockdown Fathers: The untold story, the Fatherhood Instituteâs study based on nationally representative sample of around 2,000 fathers in the spring 2020 UK lockdown found that fathers in couple families across all socio-economic groups: - spent more time with their children (78%)
- spent more time than usual on home schooling and helping with homework (68%)
- emerged from the experience feeling better equipped to support their childrenâs learning and education (57%; even among disadvantaged fathers, the figure was 50%).
This increase in fathersâ childcare involvement could potentially have a positive effect on childrenâs educational development. This is important to establish, given that attainment at an early age can shape educational pathways, and therefore future prospects and opportunities to progress into higher education and employment. |
