Participate in the Economist Educational Foundation Magic Encounters Competition with HPL! The Economist Educational Foundation is an independent charity that combines deep education knowhow with The Economist’s journalistic expertise. They empower disadvantaged children with the knowledge and skills they need for these times of complex social and environmental challenges, misinformation and polarisation. The Economist Foundation enables children to join inspiring discussions about the news which teach them to think critically, communicate effectively and understand the world. For this year’s Magic Encounters with HPL, The Economist Educational Foundation will publish a Topical Talk Special Edition entitled Politicians: slipping standards? A Topical Talk Special Edition is a series of six one-hour lessons which teachers will deliver with students aged 9-16 between the 11th of September and 20th of November 2023. The Economist Educational Foundation will also deliver a live lesson for students during this time. Students who take part in these lessons submit a Standpoint, a final audio, visual or written piece of work, to our Standpoint competition. Join us in welcoming Kerri Lyon Kerri has stepped in as our new Chief Operating Officer, having spent five years working as the Head of Operations and Compliance in an AI for energy optimisation company, after a career initially focused on university administration. Kerri has a passion for making things work well, building great teams, and tackling problems. Outside of work, Kerri is an animal lover (with seventeen animals in residence at home at the moment!), and is slowly but surely improving her French on DuoLingo.

Join us in welcoming Amy Lilley-Stewart Amy is joining our team as our new Assistant Director for Professional Learning and Development. Amy has worked in the education sector both nationally and internationally in a variety of educational contexts. Most recently, Amy worked at the University of Gloucestershire leading the Secondary Initial Teacher Training routes and working closely with colleagues in schools on delivering high quality mentoring and trainee teacher outcomes. Amy is currently completing her PhD in Creative Arts Practice and Wellbeing. |

School CSV Files This is a friendly reminder that all School CSV Files should be returned to Cassey Benito by no later than Thursday, 31st August 2023 at 13.00 pm (BST). In preparation for the next academic year, HPL requires your school CSV file containing all staff contact details, this allows all staff access to the vast range of support accessible through HPL Online. To provide your staff with access to HPL Online, the HPL Lead needs to fill in as much information as he/she can in the CSV file attached. Only staff recorded will have access to HPL Online. |

Moving from ‘differentiation’ to ‘adaptive teaching’ by Jon Eaton, Director of Kingsbridge Research School and Research Lead at Kingsbridge Community College In the Guest Blog 'Moving from ‘differentiation’ to ‘adaptive teaching’ published by Education Endowment Foundation, Jon Eaton reflects on what adaptive teaching has meant for their Trust, Education Southwest. In the blog Jon highlights "that over the past few years, ‘differentiation’ has become an increasingly unpopular term in teaching. Most likely, it was an unintended consequence of an accountability system that incentivised teachers to ‘prove’ they were differentiating by generating multiple worksheets or by organising mini-lessons for different groups."
Additionally, it has been highlighted that "If ‘differentiation’ comes with too much baggage, it may be timely to move forward with new terminology and ideas. The term ‘adaptive teaching’, especially as set out in the Early Career Framework, resets our expectations about what it means to differentiate, and it offers a more helpful and practical model." (Education Endowment Foundation, 2022) |
