Wellbeing Subject Community
Should schools focus on or teach pupils how to support their wellbeing? Is this a question for families and the wider society or do schools need to carry this? In a time when pupil wellbeing is to the fore, do we need to consider teacher wellbeing and why? For these questions and more have your say in the Wellbeing Forum and whilst you are at it, check out Yasirâs latest post âThe Importance of Social and Emotional Learning for High-Performance Learning and Well-Beingâ, this is a great place to start to have your say or give your opinion.

Cambridge Dedicated Teacher Award nominee on championing inclusion in schools
We would like to Congratulate Vidya Vinod, a teacher at GEMS Wesgreen International School for being the only teacher from the United Arab Emirates to be shortlisted for the Cambridge Dedicated Teacher Awards, 2023. In the blog, Vidya was asked "What does being a Cambridge teacher mean to you?" and she responded that she is committed to providing her students with a challenging and engaging educational experience that prepares them for success in higher education and beyond. Vidya believes in creating a supportive classroom environment that encourages collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity. Continue being an inspiration!

đĄ Thinking Education

In the blog 'How to create and manage a community of practice or peer network'Â published by The Social Change Agency, it has been highlighted that "when youâre building social movements, it helps to provide safe spaces for discussion: spaces which allow people from different disciplines and practice areas to come together and share information. These spaces form what is often known as a peer network or Community of Practice. They galvanise and energise leaders in their practice areas, helping accelerate social change. So what are Communities of Practice, why do they work and how do you create one and govern it well? If you are interested in knowing how to create a Community of Practice, continue reading this thought-provoking think-piece"Â (The Social Change Agency, 2023).

âA little more conversation, a little less actionâ
Â
8th July 2023
Contrary to what Elvis might have suggested, less doing and more talking is what I need right now to make the best start next term. Anyway, the good news is that discussion is underway! I have had some insightful responses to topics on my discussion forum and some helpful hints for planning. Developing a research culture is a priority for us next year and although we have of course had some research undertaken by colleagues in school, we have had to think hard about how to move forward. We have decided to take advantage of our hugely productive teaching and Learning Group, the powerhouse behind the SLC Teacher Toolkit. We are going to use WalkThrus by Oliver Caviglioli and Tom Sherringham as a starting point so that colleagues can focus on researching their own departments' HPL priorities. So far the forum has suggested ways to develop the research and to share the findings.Â

9th July 2023
My holiday reading this year is going to include âVisible Learning for Teachersâ by John Hattie. I have also bought âAttention Grabbing Starters and Plenaries for Teachersâ by Rob Plevin, just because it grabbed my attention. I also recall having a book on starters before, that I used to die before lending and losing, so I thought I would try something new. Itâs always good to keep refreshing and resetting, changing up what has become tired or no longer working. Expectations of teachers are always on the move, and the context in which we teach is not static, so change is inevitable. My hope is to learn something transferable, to challenge my thinking, and to find something useful to share with my colleagues in support of our HPL practice. John Hattieâs work is always thought-provoking, so I think I've got the right book in my beach bag.
