Participate in Inspirational Development Group's (IDG) Magic Encounters Competition
IDG is a world leader in the youth education sector. Their purpose is to enable young people to engage in experiential, transferable learning programmes which enhance their personal growth as tomorrow’s leaders.
IDG delivers experiential leadership programs. Each program explores different aspects of leadership, which are brought to life for the participants through command tasks. IDG then support participants to reflect on their experience and explore how they can transfer their learning into their leadership practice.
The Magic Encounters competition gives HPL school students to experience command tasks and then design their own task. The winning school will see their design turned into a real-life command task, which IDG will create and deliver to the students, and some of their global corporate clients!
This is a call for all Heads/ Principals, HPL Leads and Teachers to encourage their students to participate in the competition, as it is a unique and memorable experience for staff and students in High Performance Learning schools.

Modern Foreign Languages (MFL)
This week we would like to introduce Modern Foreign Languages by Deanne Wiseman.
Deanne loves languages. When she looks back at her life choices, the one thing that she can’t imagine is not being able to speak a different language. Deanne wasn’t brought up bilingual, so all her skills and understanding started in the secondary school classroom in a comprehensive school in Wales and have blossomed from there. This is why she is so passionate about the skills that are taught to pupils sitting in front of her. She has taught in and been responsible for language departments in a wide range of secondary schools, including mixed comprehensives, single-sex comprehensives, a Boys’ Grammar School, and a British International School, and what she loves about HPL is that it gives her the vocabulary and the evidence to explain why she does things the way she does.
HPL also provides Deanne with a tool to guide her self-reflection and expand how she teaches to enable the pupils sitting in front of her to fully develop their potential.
All the subject community leads will continue to post over the summer, so if you do manage to have some extra time, check out these discussions and join in. Have your say!

💡 Thinking Education
|
|
In the article published by School Management Plus, Professor Deborah Eyre, Founder and Chair
at High Performance Learning, stresses that teachers are not just looking for “a lot of money and the chance to go skiing” when they go abroad to teach but also want to do something “educationally exciting”. Prof. Deborah spoke
at the International and Private Schools Education Forum (IPSEF) on the 28th of June 2023 and highlighted the importance to International Schools of looking beyond extrinsic motivators like
pay and benefits for recruiting new staff. Instead, what schools need is something "which entices teachers to feel that they’re valued, that they’re doing something educationally exciting. Achieving the
#EveryoneCan
philosophy of High Performance Learning can often seem like a big challenge but we know it's also incredibly exciting to see the impact on what students and teachers alike can achieve when that mindset is embedded within a school.

The Diary of an HPL Lead

"What went well, even better if”
28th June 2023
At the end of the academic year, it is only natural to think about what you have achieved and what you might do to improve, be that in quality or efficiency. Preparation for re-accreditation in January dominated much of what I did last Autumn, gathering and presenting evidence. So this year I can be more focused on moving forward, optimising plans to get the best out of each event. I’m going back through the calendar and evaluating events, from the HPL Skills Days (part of our annual pupil induction/refresher programme), in September to the Revision Skills evening for parents in late November. I’m also pondering any tricks I might have missed. Are all my HPL bases covered?
29th June 2023
Student induction requires a multi-pronged approach. Those starting in the First Form are all in the same boat, generally new to HPL and its language. To kick off the year, we run an annual HPL Skills Day, which takes the form of a forest school-style challenge. I’m also updating Skills Days for the second and third forms, which will take part in design and business challenges respectively. For some, this will act as an introduction, but for most, it will be a refresher. Those new to the school in the Spring term will take part in their own version of a skills day, working in mixed year-group teams to develop ideas for products for the future. Running alongside this, work in class will continue to develop pupils’ use of HPL language, a key focus for us this year.
1st July 2023
As part of the Global lead role, I have been asked to run a discussion forum to support other HPL leads. What an opportunity! There is a wealth of wisdom out there (I know this from meeting colleagues at the HPL conferences in recent years), I only hope I can stimulate some interesting discussion. I’m keen that it is genuinely useful so have started with a couple of topics close to my own heart, Developing a Research Culture and New Staff Induction. Let’s see what develops.
