New to HPL?
Don't panic! We got you...…On HPL Online you will find material that can help you as the Head of a School or as the HPL Lead to introduce staff to the HPL philosophy and key concepts. You will find short videos of three sorts. These are "Launchpads," which are short introductory videos about HPL aimed at various stakeholders.
Additionally, find some "Nutshells" too, these are short pieces of CPD aimed at teachers in HPL schools. They focus on a specific aspect of HPL, for example, deliberate practice, metathinking etc. These are convenient self-study launchpads and train the teacher nutshells! Equip your staff and lead by driving HPL in your classroom and in your School.

HPL in Saudi Arabia
Recently the HPL Team working with MISK Schools in The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia have had their final visit to MISK's, who are on their first year of the High Performing Schools Award Programme. It was a fantastic visit with a chance to look back at all the good work and progress that the schools have made. It was great to see the continued enthusiasm of the staff even at a busy time for the school. With inspections and preparation for moving to their fantastic new site, the staff are fully booked. However, all are still driving HPL throughout their schools. It is certainly exciting times at MISK and HPL is looking forward to working with them and supporting them through their exciting journey.

Engagement of Parents
Kavitha Mohanram is a Teacher in the Business Faculty at GEMS, Cambridge International School, Dubai. He shared a video of a parent engaging with his child about her HPL Journey at School. Kavitha Mohanram firmly believes in having parent involvement in a child’s learning journey as it increases their relationship, interaction, and communication with their child, and results in a parent becoming more responsive to their child’s needs in terms of social, emotional, and intellectual developmental needs.
At GEMS, Cambridge International School, Dubai, the Business Department introduced the HPL outstanding parent challenge to engage parents in their child’s HPL journey. Parents participated enthusiastically and shared their understanding on HPL traits and its positive impact on their child’s performance. Best videos of HPL challenges were selected, and parents were invited for an HPL Ceremony and given trophies for winning the parent challenge.
In the video, Jean Allyssah Dimaculangan's (student at GEMS, Cambridge International School, Dubai) has her father present in the video and he speaks about his child's HPL targets and achievements. He mentions that HPL teaches his child the skills she requires to complete her tasks and her work efficiently to produce an excellent result. Furthermore, he mentions that he likes how HPL stimulates the students to evaluate and consider how they proceed with a given task. He ends off by highlighting his child's HPL targets, achievements and explains how she has developed them. How are you incorporating parents into your classroom and school? Share your ideas with the Global Community.

Join us in welcoming Hartland International School to the World Class Schools Award Scheme!
Hartland is a unique and vibrant place filled with the energy of inquisitive minds and with a strong and experienced staff and leadership team. At Hartland, they understand that an outstanding education is not merely characterised by achieving good grades. It is defined by a combination of top-quality academic provision and an expansive enrichment programme designed to provide multiple pathways to success within a safe and warm environment.
At Hartland, they strive for academic excellence in a well-disciplined, friendly and supportive community of over 60 nationalities which encourages all to succeed. They believe that if children feel happy and secure they will flourish and grow as individuals, whether through academic and pastoral engagement in the enriched curriculum during and after school, or through their focus on shared values and the Hartland Way.
At Hartland, they understand that education is about guiding and supporting young people on a pathway of success: the Principal and her staff are confident that each child in their care will unlock and realise that potential and indeed, aspire beyond with their support. They also recognise that education is a shared responsibility between family and school and at Hartland they truly value the partnership that they forge with the parents.
The Senior Leadership Team at Hartland brings a recognised education pedigree with a combined average of over 20 years of leading outstanding schools, in Dubai and in the UK.
We were delighted to host the Principal, Mrs. Fiona Cottam and three delegates from Hartland International School at the WCSA Induction at St. George's House, Windsor Castle.

The Pyramid of Expectation
In this HPL Think Piece, Melanie Saunders - Chief Education Advisor highlights the following in her think piece, "Children attend school for at least 11 years. High expectations assume that over that period, we will have a profound and measurable impact on their values, aspirations, academic confidence, and performance. That is the expectation that we have of ourselves as teachers - to make a difference.
What we expect = what we do,
What we do = what we get
When we expect high performance, we reflect that through the tasks we design, the challenges we set, the language we use and the climate of our classroom. The same is true when we expect to be disappointed.
As a result, we get what we thought we’d get… and so do our students. In HPL schools we expect to invert the Pyramid of Expectation."

Join us in welcoming Kirsten Parker as the HPL Lead
Kirsten Parker has been teaching in Kent for over 25 years, delivering Design Technology up to A level and International Baccalaureate. She joined St Lawrence College in 2017 as Head of Design Technology, having led departments at Barton Court Grammar School and Dover Girls Grammar School from 2000 and 2012 respectively. In 2019 she became HPL Global Lead Teacher for DT and is currently Assistant Head Academic at St Lawrence College.
Kirsten will be contributing a regular feature for the HPL Update. This will be “The Diary of an HPL Lead”, in addition to this Kirsten will lead the Subject Community "Being an HPL Lead". As we know the role of the HPL lead in an HPL programme school or in an FGC school is a diverse one. In whichever school you are an HPL lead though, your role is to lead the school through its HPL journey. Kirsten will share her experiences as she looks back at being an HPL Lead in a programme school and her role in developing HPL within her school as well as reflecting on the issues facing an HPL Lead in an FGC school. Don’t miss this diary, even for non HPL Lead’s this should be an interesting read.
Are you an HPL Lead? Would you like to share your experiences? Please do – firstly at the Subject Community with Kirsten and perhaps as the HPL Lead Diary writer for the HPL Update. After Kirsten’s set time we will be looking for others to contribute on a termly basis. Contact Cassey Benito if you would like to be considered.
