    • HPL Chemistry Challenge - Bridging from GCSE to A-level (KS5 or KS4 revision)

The following Chemistry Challenge is for building student confidence in their prior knowledge following a prolonged time away from the classroom. Students will need to work together and recall GCSE chemistry knowledge with speed and accuracy in order to win the challenge.

    • HPL Physics Challenge - Design an eco-friendly home (KS3 and 4)

The following HPL Challenge can be used for KS3 and adapted to meet KS4. Students must research renewable and non-renewable fuels and heat transfers in order to design and draw an eco-friendly house.

    • HPL Chemistry Challenge - Design a clean car (KS3)

The following HPL Challenge can be used for KS3 or adapted to meet KS4. Students must research renewable and non-renewable fuels and design a car that runs on clean energy. They will need to have a speech to practise their new knowledge and explain the consequences of burning fossil fuels.

    • HPL Physics Challenge - Huddle Experiment (KS3)

The following HPL Challenge can be used for KS3 or adapted to meet KS4. Students must research heat transfer or apply knowledge to design and carry out an independent experiment. This is around the theme of penguins huddling for warmth so students must consider the biological adaptations as some topic linking but also how they could adapt their own experiment for heat conservation

    • HPL Biology Challenge - Save the Bees Campaign (KS3)

The following HPL Challenge can be used for KS3 and adapted for KS2. Students must research the impact of environmental change on bees and their importance as pollinators. They will then produce a campaign poster for persuading people to save the bees. There are several optional practical activities including planting a bee garden, building a bee home and counting and taking photos of bees as part of a wider citizens project.

    • HPL Chemistry Challenge - Creating a Quiz (KS3, 4 or 5)

The following HPL Challenge can be used for KS3, 4 or 5 to recall and practise their chemistry knowledge, although this could easily be adapted for any topic. Students must create their own quiz questions and then take turns being the Quiz master in small groups. This can allow differentiation with team groupings on current performance.

    • HPL Pandemic Challenge
      (KS4 and KS5)

News of the COVID-19 outbreak is everywhere and keeping students in the dark about what is going on can make them worry more. For older students, promoting discussion around government decisions can empower them in knowing what is happening outside and what they need to do to stay safe and help the community.

This learner challenge is for students to act as the UK Government and justify decisions to prevent the virus from spreading as the pandemic unfolds. The learner must balance their knowledge of health, disease and consider the economic implications at each stage. This develops their scientific and ethical thinking and covers Health and disease in the National GCSE Curriculum.

    • Here is an introductory video that explains what pandemics are and how they spread. You might want to show this to your learners first to frame the lesson.

    • Simple Science Experiments
      (KS1 and KS2)
Below are simple science experiments that can be done at home.

Make 'plastic' from milk using vinegar. Use that plastic to make something new and creative, maybe a necklace or a key-ring?

Are birds affected by different coloured food? This bird seed science experiment should prove that birds like brightly-coloured meals.

    • HPL Stop Smoking Challenge
      (KS3 and KS4)
Understanding the affects of smoking and the behaviour behind why people smoke can be key to giving up. Despite levels of smoking continually decreasing in the UK, 6% of secondary pupils are classed as "smokers" and the numbers increase from aged 11 to 15 years old.

This learner challenge is for students to review the data and impact of smoking on your health, consider what behaviour leads to people smoking or struggling to stop and then producing an article or leaflet on behalf of their local hospital. Finally, it encourages students to swap their work in pairs and peer-mark each other's.
