    • HPL Maths Challenge - Finding the oldest tree (upper KS1 and KS2)

The following HPL Maths Challenge is great for getting students to be curious about the world outside and apply maths to nature. By measuring and calculating, students practise finding perimeters of trees to find the oldest one (rudimentary measurement aside!).

    • HPL Maths Challenge - Being an adult: budgeting and spending (KS3/KS4 or KS5)

This HPL Maths challenge is a good way of KS3 practising arithmetic but a good opportunity for KS4 and KS5 to practise budgeting as part of a social lesson. Students must calculate the cost of their lifestyle through research and then what salary they would need as a result,  building aspirations and self-motivation as well.

    • HPL Maths Challenge: Numbers at Wimbledon (KS2)

The following HPL Challenge is for KS2 to help bring real-world scenarios into the maths lesson. Students must use areas and perimeters to calculate the sizes of a tennis court and then play some multiplication style matches.

    • Maths Challenge: Design a Lunar Theme Park (KS2, KS3)

Remember Theme Park World?! Just like the game, students have a large loan to design and set up a theme park. They will need to take into account ticket sales, taxes and more in this challenge to practise their arithmetic, ACP and VAA skills.

    • HPL Maths Challenge: Mountains of gold (KS4)

This short Maths activity is a great starter to a lesson or extension task that  introduces the problem solving cycle. Students must find information to calculate the value of a stack of 10 rupees the height of Mount Everest and follow this up by posing their own questions to solve as a fun way of using metric conversions and estimations.

    • HPL Maths Challenge: What day was it? (KS2)

This short Maths activity is a great starter to a lesson or extension task that develops student analysing; working effectively within the rules of a domain to follow a methodology with accuracy. Students use a formula to figure out the day of the week of several important events from their date alone.

    • Maths Challenge: Murder in Maths Challenge
      (All Key Stages)
Students must break the codes to find out the who, what and where of a murder in the Maths Department! Codes are a great way to show students some real life applications of mathematics (and possible career paths for mathematicians), as well as being a fun lesson! Teachers just use the introduction at the start of a lesson and then sit back as they solve the crime!

    • Maths Challenge: Paper Planes
Will a longer wing-span help a paper plane fly further? Learners build a paper plane and experiment with longer wing-spans to see if they fly further when thrown.

The simple handout gives learners instructions on how to measure and record their findings.

If you need some plane building inspiration here are a couple of videos:
